About Sinai / History
While Sharm’s history is relatively new,
the Sinai Peninsula’s history dates back to Biblical times when Moses is said to have crossed the Sinai leading the Israelites out of Egypt to ‘the Promised Land’. Mt Sinai is where Moses is said to have received the Ten Commandments from God and in recognition of this ‘holy land’ the Monastery of St. Catherine was built at the foot of the mountain. However, Sharm began when a handful of pioneering scuba divers crossed into Sinai at the Taba border with Israel in the 1970s and headed south to Naama Bay in 4-wheel drives, where they camped on the beach and dived from the shore.
In 1982, after a peace treaty with Israel, the Sinai Peninsula was returned to Egypt. In the mid-late 80s the Egyptian Government realising the potential of Sharm as a tourist destination engaged the assistance of European divers to help develop the tourist diving industry.

By the mid 1990s the resort had emerged as a world-class diving destination and its proximity to much of Europe, from whence many of the tourists came, only served to heighten its popularity.

The late 90s saw Sharm expand beyond merely a diving resort. With its near-perfect climate, foreign tour operators recognised its potential as a holiday destination for all tourists in search of sun, sea and sand. The increase in visitor numbers fuelled the resort’s development and, with tourists looking for more than simply a dive destination, many top-class hotels, resorts in their own rights, sprung up along the coastline. The development continues to this day but, thankfully, has been checked with the creation of protected zones within the region, preserving the region’s natural heritage for generations of visitors to come. Ras Mohammed National Park was created in 1983; this was followed by Nabq Protectorate and Abu Galum. More recently, the area around St. Catherine’s Monastery has been given protected status, too.
